                                                   By a Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, July 5: State Power and Industry Minister Pradyut Bordoloi today said that the State Government was determined to project Asom as an investment destination, and noted industrialist Ratan Tata came forward to help the State achieve that feat.
Talking to newsmen in the city today, Bordoloi said that the State would now use the benefits of the situation it had created during the last five years. Admitting that bureaucratic red tape in the State is dissuading investors, both domestic and foreign, he said that with a view to streamline the investment process, he proposed to the Government to set up a separate
secretariat for industrial investment, and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi agreed to his proposal.
He said that in September next year, the State Government would hold a series of conclaves to project Asom as an investment destination, and noted industrialist Ratan Tata would come forward with a helping hand towards that end. “The first investment conclave will be held in Mumbai, then in New Delhi followed by a similar conclave in Bangkok and the last meeting will be
held at Guwahati,” he said, adding that besides Ratan Tata, investors and bankers would take part in the conclaves. Bordoloi, however, fell short of spelling out in what exact ways the Tata group would help Asom in projecting itself as an investment destination.
According to Bordoloi, the State Government’s thrust is on making the State a commercial hub among the South-east Asian nations, but the media is doing much damage to the cause. “Killings are everywhere in India, but whenever there is killing in Asom, the report is being excessively highlighted, thereby sending a wrong signal to prospective investors,” Bordoloi said,
adding that the GDP growth in the State was satisfactory but growth in the manufacturing sector was very low and that needed to be taken care of. The thrust, according to him, should be on both heavy and agro-based industries.
