Engineering college in North Bank
Sir,–It is a matter of great satisfaction that the State Government has now decided to set up a new engineering college in the State with a view to meeting the growing needs of the students of Asom for higher education in various fields of engineering and technology. The existing two engineering colleges namely Assam Engineering College (AEC), and Jorhat Engineering College (JEC) are quite inadequate to accommodate the large number of eligible candidates seeking admission to various technical courses in computer engineering, electronics engineering, telecom engineering, software engineering, information technology, environmental engineering, bio-technology etc. It has to be admitted that due to non availability of adequate facilities for higher education in engineering and technological subjects a large number of students of the State have to migrate to Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi etc. for the purpose of higher studies in technical education.

In this connection it may be cited that as compared to other States like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa etc. the growth process of technical education in the State is very static. It is quite unfortunate that Asom has now only 2 engineering colleges as against 1265 in the country. It is extremely sad that the State Government has failed to establish not a single new engineering college over the last 45 years since 1960. If a State like Haryana can set up 11 new engineering colleges, 17 MCA colleges, 6 MBA colleges and 8 Pharmacy colleges over a period of last 10 years, there is no point why Asom with a population of 2.66 lakh should not have at least 5 engineering colleges at the rate one engineering college for every 50 lakh population.

Regarding the location of the proposed third engineering college it may be brought to notice of the State Government that the North Bank region comprising the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and Darrang with a population of more than 50 lakh (2005) has remained quite backward in engineering education and surprisingly enough it has yet to get a polytechnical institute. The people of North Bank region of Asom have been rightly demanding the establishment of an engineering college in the region for the last several years.

It is hoped that the State Government would give due consideration to the educational requirement of the North Bank region and may set up the proposed engineering college at Biswanath Chariali which has a favourable location with sufficient government vacant lands for the purpose. Besides, Biswanath Chariali has now grown up as an important educational centre in the North Bank region. – Yours etc., DR MC BHUYAN, Jalukbari, Guwahati.
