*Gurgaon *(PTI): Around five crore female foetuses in the country were
"terminated" last year, Haryana health minister Kartar Devi said on Sunday.

Devi, who was speaking at the inauguration of a clinic in the civil
hospital, said said the situation was "sad and unfortunate".

he health minister noted that the sex ratio in the state was "very
alarming". She said: "We must not consider girls as a burden on the family."


Citing the example of Indira Gandhi, she added that girls can bring honour
to their families.

Devi announced that the Haryana government intended to reduce the maternal
mortality ratio from the current 300 in a lakh mothers to below 100 by 2010.
