Debutant filmmaker starts on a high note
  - Saurav Das launches anti-drug crusade through medium of cinema

File picture of an anti-drug rally Guwahati, Nov. 8: Debutant filmmaker Saurav Das’s intention of giving shape to his first celluloid venture, Dreamers, Achievers and Winners, is quite clear — to spread awareness against the drug menace among the young generation.
Das, a native of Karimganj, has personally seen how drug addiction has taken hold of an entire generation of the Northeast. Moreover, in Bangalore, where he pursued his masters in applied genetics, he saw many close friends falling prey to the same affliction.
Then and there young Das thought of speaking out against drug abuse through the powerful medium of cinema.
The premiere of the film at the Press Club here on Monday saw an auditorium packed with cine buffs. The discerning audience was full of appreciation for the aspiring filmmaker, who considers Jahnu Barua his idol, for handling the complex issue with great maturity.
The filmmaker is next planning to screen his film for the cine buffs of Bangalore, where the entire film was shot.
“Since I am from Assam, I wanted to show the film to my home audience first and then to the rest of the world,” said 23-year-old Das, whose father Sandipan Das was among the audience at the club.
“I am also planning to send the film to international and national film festivals to make my campaign against drugs a more holistic one,” Das added.
The one-and-a-half hour film tells the story of a group of friends in college and how one of them falls prey to drugs.
All the cast and crew of the film are rookies who have worked in unison to portray the horrific and miserable life of drug addicts and the actors are all students.
“The film is in Hinglish (Hindi-English), the popular lingo of the current generation and has succeeded in portraying the main issues confronting youth in a sensitive manner,” said a well-known critic. “It is a welcome news that the Assamese film industry is developing. The fact that a young filmmaker from Assam is making an attempt to deal with serious issues with great success, is something to cheer about,” he added.
Das, who wants to pursue filmmaking in the future, also revealed that his next film would be specifically on the Northeast.
“I am working on an idea to portray the Northeast differently on screen. But let me first execute my idea, before saying anything regarding my forthcoming film,” said a reticent Das.
He has written the story, screenplay and dialogue for the film.
The film also has four beautiful songs in Hindi. Two of Das’ closest friends — Varun and Sujoy — have scored the music for the film. The cinematography has been handled by the trio comprising Nikhil, Avani and Siddharth.
