 BHOPAL, Nov 6 – Advocating a proactive policy, Union Minister for Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises, Santosh Mohan Dev suggested that Tripura model should be adopted to tackle militancy. Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of a function to mark 50 years of BHEL’s Bhopal plant, the Minister said businessmen often blame lack counter militancy operations to rise in insurgency in Asom. “Businessmen have told me that Army and paramilitary forces are often based in towns and cities and do not move out into the interiors where the militants often operate with impunity,” he said.

Condemning the bomb blast at Guwahati, the Minister suggested that a dedicated force should be raised to fight militancy. The Tripura experiment has been successful, as the State Government has been able to deploy special task forces drawn from local police force, in the interior areas to counter the militants,” he said.

Asserting that the Centre was concerned about the situation in Asom, he said its seriousness could be gauged from the fact that the Prime Minister reacted within hours of the incident. Dev, however, lamented the breakdown of the ULFA peace process. The peace dialogue should have been continued, he commented.
