It baffles me and I sincerely think that it will really be a subject of research for the Assamese youth as to why we write 'Sankaradeva' in English while we say say Sankardev (more correctly Xongkordev) in Assamese. Is it because we sincerely think that the Assamese language is not at par with the Sankkrit (correctly Songskrit) and other Indian langauges? It is time we Assamese need to reflect what exactly we think of ourselves. Is it possible that our self esteem is so poor that we have to follow Songskrit and other regional language all the time sacrificing our own?
Is that the real problem of the Assamese?

Book on life, ideals of Sankaradeva released
By A Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Sept 11 - Mahapurush Sri Sri Sankaradeva, a book on the life and ideals of the founder of neo-Vaishnavite movement of Asom, Srimanta Sankaradeva, written by Bhupen Barma, former Prof and Head of the Department of Assamese, Pandu College, and planned and published by the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Foundation, was released at a function on September 9 at the Pensioners' Bhawan here.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University Dr Nirmal Kumar Choudhury inaugurated the function and also released the book. The book will be translated into Bodo, Rabha, Mising, Karbi and Tiwa languages for spreading the ideals of Srimanta Sankaradeva among these peoples and to strengthen the traditional bond of unity in the State's society.
In his speeches, Dr Choudhury regretted that the Sankaradeva Chairs in the Punjab University and at Brindaban were closed due to the apathy of the State Government. He also observed that the Naamghars of Arunachal Pradesh should be connected with the mainstream of the Sankaradeva movement.
The function was presided over by Durga Prasad Neog, a former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, who is also the president of the Foundation.
In the meantime, renowned Sankaradeva scholar Dr Keshavananda Deva Goswami has undertaken English translation of the Kathaguru Charita on the behalf of the Foundation. One of its parts will be published soon, said general secretary of the Foundation Sankar Das while addressing the gathering that day.
