India Today, the undisputed number 1 magazine of India conducted a comprehensive survey of all 30 states for the fourth consecutive year and results were announced at the INDIA TODAY CHIEF MINISTERS CONCLAVE where the President of India was the Chief Guest. They have divided into three categories : (1) Big states - 20 (2) Small states - 10 (3) Union Territories - 5. Assam ranked 16th out of 20 big states. Please note some of the quotes :-
 
1) Performance of Punjab (no.1) and Kerala (no.2) is more or less static.
2) Himachal Pradesh (no.3), Karnataka and Gujarat are potential toppers.
3) Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan are improving slowly, steadily.
4) MP, UP (no.17), Orissa (no.18) show maximum acceleration, but from a low base.
5) Assam, Bihar(no.20) and Jharkhand (no.19) showing faint signs of improvement.
 
6) Despite the mighty Brahmaputra, less than 6% of cropped area in Assam is irrigated - the lowest among all states. In neighbouring West Bengal, it is 44%.
 
7) Punjab has a 30-fold lead over Assam in agriculture
 
8) Remittances from abroad in Kerala are seven times the budgetary support given to the state by the Centre, making the state NRI's own country.
 
9) For every Rs.100/- that banks in Tamil Nadu get as deposit, they give Rs.105.4 as credit, making its credit-deposit ratio 105.4 - the highest in the country.
