In the context of some of the discussions, I thouht this letter may be of
some interest.
The writer, obviously does not support using "Asom" nor "Assam".

But I more than likely didn't get what he is suggesting here:

>As such, even today our people have retained the alphabet 'S' to occur
twice and enjoy referring to >their state as ''Assam''. Also, when a certain
quarter starts writing ''Asom'', they fail to realize that ?>there is no
point in retaining the first 'A' and changing the second 'A' to 'O'. Truly,
''Ass'' — aami !

Is he suggesting just *"Som"* ? : ie. No second S, no first A, and replace
the second A to an O.

** *Aami Asomiya!
*I was going through the pages of a regional English daily published from
Guwahati a couple of days back, when I happened to notice a demeaning
reference to the people of the State. It is in the column relating to
''cinema programme'' in Guwahati. In a few cinema halls of the city, an
Asomiya film Aami Asomiya was being screened. There was a smell of
deliberate mischief when it was found as ''Aami Asomiya (Ass)''. Instead of
writing the film as ''Ass'', the abbreviation ''Asm'' could be used. It is
ironic to see that the people of the State do not have any sense of
self-respect.
The first British officer of the East India Company, who used the word
''Assam'' for our State, might have realized this fact way back in 1826. As
such, even today our people have retained the alphabet 'S' to occur twice
and enjoy referring to their state as ''Assam''. Also, when a certain
quarter starts writing ''Asom'', they fail to realize that there is no point
in retaining the first 'A' and changing the second 'A' to 'O'. Truly,
''Ass'' — aami !
