[Assam] Shillong-Guwahati cable car system would have been something to make a song and dance about. Planners should also consider an automated elliptical monorail system covering whole of greater Guwahati.

Guwahati, Feb 1 (IANS) Assam will have India's longest cable car along the
mighty river Brahmaputra in Guwahati, aimed at creating an alternative mode
of communication for people residing on either side of the riverbank.

The proposed rope-hauled car will run from the city's Kacharighat to
Dolgobinda in north Guwahati covering a distance of 1.82 km and expected to
carry about 250 passengers per hour.

'This river ropeway will not only be an alternative mode of transport for
people commuting on a daily basis to and from north Guwahati, but will also
be a major tourist attraction,' Guwahati Development Department minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma told journalists Thursday.

'This is going to be the longest river ropeway in India.'

The estimated cost of the mega project is pegged at about Rs.300 million and
is expected to begin by March.

'The completion time is about two years and we have entrusted Swiss Ropeway
Corporation as a foreign consultant for the project,' the minister said. An
estimated 3,000 people come to the city daily by boats from north Guwahati.

'The cable car would have vertical open lifts at both ends of the terminal,
besides attractive viewpoints,' Sarma said.

The project is to be implemented by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development
Authority (GMDA) with RITES, a government of India enterprise specialising
in consultancy of multi-disciplinary transportation sectors, given the task
of supervising the proposed ropeway.

That apart, the government is planning metro rails in Guwahati as part of
another mega project. 'This is in an infant stage and we hope to get things
moving very soon,' the minister said.
