[Assam] My Take on Why Independence - I

Because you are the only one in the net who seems to have a point 'why
independence is necessary'. Do you see any others in the net?
All others seem to be happy with the status quo unless someone like you
wake them with a point of view.

eendiscussionsoranalysesof,whatIconsidertobethemostimportantcause:Theone
involvinggovernmentalunresponsiveness,bothstateandcentral,tothepeople'sn
eeds,concernsanddemandsanditsutterinabilitytodeliveronitsmostfundamental
ofduties,leadingtothewidelyheldbelief,evenamongstthosewhodecryULFAthelou
dest,thatAssamgetsstep-motherlytreatment,thatitistreatedlikesecond-class
citizensandsoforth.


Theindependenceseekersrealized,rightly,thatsuccessiveAssamGovts.sinceind
ependenceandtheircontrollersatNewDelhididnotcareorcouldnotdeliveriftheyd
id.Andwhenthepeopletooktothestreetsinprotest,theygotshotat,brutalizedand
imprisoned,almostalwayswithouttrial.THeIndianintelligentsia,soproudofthe
ir'democratic'government,wasnowheretobeseenrisinginprotestagainsttheirgo
vernmentshighlyundemocraticactions.SuchwasthestateofIndianDemocracy.Thed
isaffecteddecidedthatIndiangovernmentanditsagents,theAssamGovts.,wouldne
verrespondtotheirneeds.Outofdesperationstheytooktoarms,tobreakfreefromIn
dianrule,andthus,amongotherthings,re-shapetheirgovernmenttofittheirneeds
:Political,economic,culturalandwhathaveyou.


Idon'tknowanyone,inAssam,elsewhereinIndiaorabroad,whowouldnotwanttoseean
endtotheinsurgencyandthenever-endingarmedconflict.Butforthatwishtobereal
istic,thethoughtfulpersonmustask:Whathaschangedtotheconditionsthatcreate
dtheconflicttobeginwith?


Andiftheyhavenot,whynot?


Nowthequestionwehavetoaskishowtoremovethosecausesthatgaverisetothiscallf
orindependence?IsitpossibleundertheprevailingsystemofIndianrule?


Manyinthisforum,pastandpresent,implied--butneverclearlytookastandthatIca
nrecall,toconfidentlysuggestthatYES,changeispossibleunderprevailingIndia
nrule,backedupbycredibleevidence.Thediscussion,asfarasIcantell,isentirel
yabsentinAssamorelsewhereinIndia.Onlywhenfreshviolenceeruptsthereisatemp
oraryawarenessbutthediscourseisentirelydominatedbythe'desi-sekurity-wall
as',compliantlyandmindlesslyparrotedbyalargesegmentoftheAssamestablishme
nt.
