GUWAHATI, Jan 1 This for the first time that the Prime Minister of the State had offered a safe passage to the ULFA. Earlier, the State Government used to offer such safe passages to the militant outfit, said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi here today. He was addressing the mediapersons on the occasion of the New Year. He said that the response to the offer of the Prime Minister was yet to come from the outfit. However, he reiterated, the doors for negotiation were open for the outfit. The Government believes that only through peace, dialogue and democratic methods the State can march on to progress. The example of Bodoland is there for every one to see in this respect, he said.
The Chief Minister also reiterated that the 33rd National Games hosted by the State would be held as per schedule and the ULFA threat to boycott the Games would have no impact on it.
The threat by the ULFA is not going to dampen the morale of the participants of the Games. On the other hand, the people of the State have the courage to overcome such threats and violent acts of the militant organizations. This is why the State is now able to march ahead. We want the Games to be successful.
The State has by this time taken all the precautions to check any subversive act. Moreover, the infrastructure developed by the State for the Games is perhaps the largest so far in the country, said the Chief Minister in reply to questions.
Guwahati expansion: The Government has also a plan for the expansion of Guwahati city. The city is expanding to its suburban areas.
But these areas should not be allowed to suffer from haphazard growth as the main city has now been suffering. Therefore, the State Government has asked the departments concerned to plan growth of these areas, said the Chief Minister.
