[Assam] Why do the Biharis living in Assam speak Hindi? Being loyal to India? Their mother tongue is Bhojpuri, derived from Maithili, the root of which is known to be Assamese. They speaking Assamese would have been more logical.

GUWAHATI: After killing 64 people mostly from Bihar, Ulfa has asked all
Hindi-speaking people to leave Assam immediately. The banned outfit,
however, denied its involvement in the recent killings, which it said was a
"creation of a situation" by the Centre to launch an operation against Ulfa.

To justify its ultimatum on the Hindi-speaking people, who comprise less
than 3% of the state's 2.6 crore population, it said people from the
community have acted as Army informers and information given by them helped
security forces kill five Ulfa militants in separate encounters on December
31 and January 2 respectively.

In the latest edition of Ulfa's fortnightly newsletter, 'Freedom', it said
the conflict is with the Indian government not with the Hindi-speaking
people. "We have appealed to the Hindi-speaking people several times to go
away from here as soon as possible because of the conflict in Asom.

Again, we appeal to those people coming from colonial India to stay away
during this conflict period," Ulfa chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa said in the
newsletter issued on Thursday.

"We have nothing against the Hindi-speaking people... Death is always
tragic, whether it is the killing at Kakopathar, Makum, or the members of
Ulfa or the Hindi-speaking people.
