The Shetty episode exploded far beyond expectations, the Indian media as well the Government of India taking the cudgels on behalf of the star and the British media not falling far behind. Big Brother preceded all other news in the nationwide Television yesterday, though the dailies like The Times and the Daily Telegraph dealt with it like any other news.

I read the letters this morning together with Peter Foster’s blog in the Daily Telegraph.(19 January’07). and The Times on the issue. Peter perhaps says everything that we are likely to voice.

Like Peter Foster I have not seen Big Brother in the telly, except perhaps the fatal bit as presented in the news, Jade Goody calling our girl Shilpa a liar to which the hapless Indian star did not respond. No, it was not ennobling in any way. I would not like to comment on it except I admit this was an unusual kind of show. Channel 4, the sponsors, deny any racism.

I wonder if the upshot of the episode is that Big Brother is having the last laugh because of its prospects of further extensions of their contract and Setty too looking forward to more of Bollywood glitter if not another cheque of £250,000 from Big Brother. Setty’s mother, a model once, also appears to have earned her first-ever minutes of glory in British Television. I hope we all have not been taken for a ride under the guise of racism.
