Subject: [asha-dc-core] Good article on conflicting interests

We should discuss at our GBM if our policy of partnering with corporate sponsors for events conflicts with our mission in any way.

Read on for a detailed article by LA Times that concludes with:

"The overall figures in this series may significantly understate the volume of Gates Foundation investments that tend to conflict with its charitable goals."

Good article on conflicting interests between donations and Posted by: "Melli Annamalai" annam38 at yahoo.com melli_annamalai Fri Jan 19, 2007 11:19 am (PST) http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-gatesx07jan07,0,6827615.story?coll=la-home-headlines

I do not post this to point fingers at a particular foundation, but because it nicely highlights how the money for donation to alleviate suffering might have been obtained by causing suffering elsewhere.

This is one of the reasons why several groups do not like to accept corporate grants.

Individual donations could also come from income and investments that could be suspect from this point of view. An extension of that is exploring how we ourselves lead our lives and how that impacts the world while we volunteer to try and alleviate some of that impact. These are all very difficult questions, but I think it is good to keep asking them and do our best to minimize the conflict. We have had all these discussions before, but it is always good to reiterate, and I also wanted to show newer volunteers this point of view.
