AXX protests ULFA killings
By a Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Jan 24: The Axom Xahitya Xabha (AXX) today registered its strong protest against the rampant killing that is taking place in the State on the pretext of independence of Asom. The premier literary body of the State took out peace processions, held protest rallies and sent a clear message to the perpetrators of the killing that the literary body would not remain a mute spectator if the killing continued further.
In the city, a peace procession was taken out from Latasil Field where the processionists culminated again for a rally with AXX president Kanaksen Deka in the chair. Deka said that the demand for independence of Asom by youths who were under the control of jihadi groups and the ISI of Pakistan was indeed ridiculous. The AXX wont sit idle if the killing continues, Deka said, and appealed to the people to come out against the perpetrators of violence.
He added: The youths who have been demanding independence of Asom staying on Bangladesh soil should come to the State, mobilize public opinion in favour of their demands and form the government. We are independent, and as such we can form government independently. But the killing wont solve the problem. He warned Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh against the killing of innocent people in the State.
Speaking at the rally, former AXX president Jatin Sarma said: Those who term Hindi-speaking people as foreigners should know that their forefathers were not Indians. Its a ploy to divide the society on communal lines. Asom should get only economic independence, and that cant be achieved through violence.
Former Asom Transport Minister Anjan Dutta said: Militancy cant solve any problem. We cant blame it on the Government or the rebel group for todays situation in the State. There should be mobilization of public support against violence. On peace front, he said: The Government invited the ULFA for talks, but it is unfortunate that the Government has backtracked on the pretext of fulfilment of some conditions.
Former AXX president Lakhinandan Bora said: Whatever the AXX says reflects the aspirations of the people. The movement for independence of Asom is a farce. The problems should be solved through talks.
All Assam Students Union (AASU) leader Dipankar Nath said that the main demand of the people of Asom was restoration of peace, not independence of Asom.
Assam Lawyers Association (ALA) president Satyen Deka said: The good relationship between the Asomiyas and the Biharis is age old, and the recent killing of Biharis in Asom was not supported by the people of the State. He appealed to the people of Bihar to provide security to the Asomiyas living in Bihar.
Xatradhikar Gagan Chandra Adhikary, Purbanchaliya Marwari Sanmilan, Sodou Asom Hindi-Bhasi Sanmilan, Hindi-Bhasi Yuba Sanmilan and Youth Congress leaders took part in the rally.
