it seems upper-castes are bringing back oppression in a new way - what do C-da and Mukul-da have to say about that -- any brainy ideas on Assam policy?

DHEMAJI, June 2 – Agitational programmes have been intensified in Dhemaji district by open constituency demand committees here after the recent publication of draft proposals of delimitation commission which kept the newly formed (proposed) third constituency of the district reserved for ST(P).

The down passenger train coming from Murkongselek station was detained about three hours of Dhemaji station. Police arrested hundreds of picketers and let the train go. The organisations will take out a torchlight procession of June 3 from every village of the district in demand of dereservation.

Hariprsada Dihingia, executive president of Sissiborgaon Open LAC Sangram Samiti, said that if the delimitation commission does not agree with the just demands of the people of Dhemaji, then severe agitational programmes will be taken up in future.

Tulan Konwar, a leader of the agitation said that the delimitation commission will be responsible for any consequences if the democratic right of the non-tribal population of the district are denied.

Jiten Rajkhowa, another leader of the agitation said that, the organisation have prepared to place the demands of dereservation of proposed Sissiborgaon constituency on the hearing to be held at Jorhat District Library on June 16 next with adequate documents. Justice Kuldip Singh, chairman of the commission will be present in the hearing.

It may be mentioned that both tribal and non-tribal population of Dhemaji district have demanded that the third LAC of the district should be open, as the existing two constituencies of the district are reserved for ST(P). The tribal population of the district feel that the non-tribals are deprived of the democratic rights of contesting in an election and keeping the newly formed LAC will boost communal harmony in the district. Therefore, a tribal leader and MLA, Jonai LAC, Bhuban Pegu also accompanied the delegation of dereservation demand committees who visited Delhi several times to place the demand before the delimitation commission.
