05.06 - India : four journalists threatened by the separatist rebel group United Liberation Front of Asom
The separatist United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) at the weekend threatened to “punish” four journalists who were involved in the organisation of a demonstration in Guwahati in the north-east on 31 May 2007. The four: D.N. Chakrabarty, Nava Thakuria, Ronen Goswami and Rupam Baruah, have openly condemned an escalating campaign of violence, particularly bomb attacks on markets, which have been attributed to the rebel group. The ULFA has been fighting since 1979 to win independence from India for the north-eastern region.

05.06 - Ecuador : President sets conditions for signing Chapultepec Declaration
President Rafael Correa said on the air on 2 June that he would be “delighted” to sign the Chapultepec Declaration on press freedom if the Ecuadorean media accept his four conditions. “The first is that the media must respect their professional obligations,” he said. “The second is that they must ensure the quality of their reports - they cannot be taken out of context - by means of self-regulation.” He added that the Ecuadorean press must democratise itself and fulfil its “social function.” He finally warned: “If the press betrays its citizens, it must be considered a crime against the public’s faith, because we trust you.”

05.06 - Greece : night-time attack on several publications by suspected anarchists
Around 15 people attacked the building that houses a number of publications owned by Lambrakis Press, including the country’s most popular daily newspaper Ta Nea, yesterday in Athens. Two people sustained minor injuries and the vestibule was daubed with red paint. No one claimed responsibility but suspicion fell on the anarchist groups that attacked another newspaper, Apoyevmatini, on 14 May.
