JORHAT, June 6: Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh will inauguated the North-east chapter of the Indian Institute of Plantation Management inside Tocklai Experimental Station here on June 26.
The Indian Institute of Management (IIPM) was set up in the early nineties in Bangalore to cater to the need of proper management in the plantaiotn sector vis-a-vis rubber, coffee, tea and spices.
It was set up on the behest of the Consultative Committee of Plantation Association (CCPA) and the Commerce Ministry.
Sources in the tea industry said that in the begining, only the managerial staff of tea gardens would be provided training. But later on, fresh candidates will be recruited to the institute.
Tocklai on its part has provided logistical support for setting up the institute temporarily inside the premises “since it would take a long time for settng up such an institute as regard to procurement of land and construction of infrastructure.”
A senior tea planter here said that the institute would not only be a boon for the organized tea sector but also for the small tea growers.
“Since managerial aspect is a prime criteria for any industry, small tea growers who lack far behind in this count wil benefit tremendously, he said.
IIPM, Bangalore presently caters to the needs of the plantation sector in Southern India.
A senior scientist at the Tocklai Tea Research Station said that as Tocklai provides technical knowhow to the tea industry, setting up of an IIPM here would add an extra dimension to the crisis-ridden tea industry.
