There are others--SCARED STIFF
<. 36/- to a $ > means export will plummet,NRI's will find no JOY in sending $ to Ind. Many will return.Causing more pressure.Air prices will fall in Rs. Hordes will make Holiday Trips and steal out Billions in Hawala to buy Gold/Luxury abroad.
Share prices already sliding down.

<8 % economic growth for the long run>
Nobody is clear on this Government Jargon NOW--far less on the Long Run.
As I see debates in NDTVProfit/TimesNow.

Thanks Chitta for the info and situation in Kokrajhar.

That is precisly why, sometimes a well-funded (private) college may actually do well. While it will be good to get the State and Central govt to invest in education, it might do well to explore the private funding avenues as well.

You are correct that there is tendency for many Assamese to go to other states for education (or even overseas - like us) if they can avail the opportunity. But, after many years, now we keep hearing that an increasing number of Indians are NOT interested in coming to the US/UK to study or work. It seems many find it more fulfilling to study and work in India itself. That is a good sign. Hopefully a similar situation happens in Assam as well.

BTW: Was talking to someone in India - and their take was - with the $ expected to be around Rs. 36/- to a $ for the forseeable future and lower later, has given Indians a 'psychological' boost and there seems to be a lot about excitement with the 8 % economic growth for the long run.

Ram daIt seems Assam has become giant of a state and ourvision has become very local centric. If an institute comes up at say western Assam district of Kokrajhar,it does not exist for the people of Dibrugarh. Eitherthey would not like to go there or they may not bewelcomed there for not being "local". Assamese people would prefer sending children to Bangalore, Pune or tosome obscure engineering college of Karnataka or MP,but institutes coming up closer at home hardly createsany ripples if it not in your neighborhood. And it seems that's what has happened for Assam's brand newtechnical institute-Central Institute of Technology,Kokrajhar. The institute is centrally funded andmodeled after NERIST. Though right now it does notplan to produce gradates, eventually there is a planto convert the institute to a full fledged engineeringdegree institute. But it seems people of Assam have failed to takenotice of the institute and its very parochial reservation policy. If you are outside the fourdistricts of BTC, the prospect for getting into theinstitute is dim. 60% of the seats are for BTC, 20%for rest of India and a mere 20% is for the rest ofAssam along with all other northeast states. Basically even if you are in Assam, just because you are not inthose four districts of Bodoland, you are clubbedtechnically in the same category as a student fromSikkim or Tripura. As it is centrally funded and modeled after NERIST, there is a potential that it will do better than thetwo state engineering colleges in long run. So it isimperative that the skewed reservation policy ischanged now itself for the benefit of students fromall the corners of the state. It's a fact thatinstitute was part of Bodo accord and was meant forbringing technical education to the backward districtsof Bodoland. But setting aside 60% of seats forBodoland (as if it is a separate state from Assam) and 36% for Bodo students looks highly unbalanced. It issurprising that the student organizations of the stateare silent on this. It seems no body wants toantagonize the groups representing some segments ofBodo people.regardsChittaranjan PathakCENTRAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY(Centrally Funded Institute under MHRD, Govt. ofIndia)Kokrajhar :: Assam -783370INFORMATION BROCHURETHE INSTITUTEThe Central Institute of Technology (CIT) is set up inKokrajhar District (BTC) of Assam by theGovernment of India, initially as a project and "inprinciple" approved by Planning Commission.
