GUWAHATI, June 22: With the graph of illegal immigrants to Asom showing a steep rise, there is an abnormal increase of madrassas in the nook and corner of the State. Several intelligence agencies have already pointed out the fact that most of the madrassas have become a safe haven for jehadis and fundamentalists. Even State Minister for Home Rockybul Hussain admitted on the floor of the Assam Assembly in 2001 that suspicious activities were seen in some of the madrassas. However, the Government has not initiated any action against those ‘suspected madrassas’.
Each madrassa should register itself under the State Madrassa Education Board (SMEB) which has its office at Kahilipara. But records available with the SMEB have revealed that almost an equal number of unregistered madrassas have surfaced in the State. Sources from the SMEB said that Asom has 810 registered madrassas while the number of unregistered madrassas is 656.
A recent SMEB data said in Barpeta there are 16 registered madrassas and three unregistered ones; in Bongaigaon there are 74 registered madrassas; in Cachar there are 49 registered madrassas and 28 unregistered madrassas; in Darrang there are 60 registered madrassas; in Dhemaji there are nine registered madrassas and one unregistered madrassa; in Dhubri there are 70 registered madrassas and 117 unregistered madrassas; in Dibrugarh there are eight registered madrassas and four unregistered madrassas; in Goalpara there are 48 registered madrassas and 19 unregistered madrassas; in Hailakandi there are 24 registered madrassas and 43 unregistered madrassas; in Jorhat there are four unregistered madrassas; in Kamrup there are 52 registered madrassas and three unregistered madrassas; in Karbi Anglong there are 11 registered madrassas and two unregistered madrassas; in Karimganj there are 32 registered madrassas and 72 unregistered madrassas; in Kokrajhar there are 38 unregistered
madrassas; in Morigaon there are 187 registered madrassas and 13 unregistered madrassas; in Nagaon there are 15 registered madrassas and 96 unregistered madrassas; in Nalbari there are eight registered madrassas; in North Lakhimpur there are 13 registered madrassas and 46 unregistered madrassas; in Sonitpur there is one registered madrassa and 71 unregistered madrassas; in Tinsukia there are 14 unregistered madrassas; and in Golaghat there are 33 registered madrassas and 82 unregistered madrassas.
Sources said around 350 Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) and Muslim Liberation Tiger Force of Asom (MULTA) members are active in Asom. The arrest of several HuM militants has revealed that they have close links with foreign countries while a section of them is taking shelter in the madrassas along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Despite such data, the State Government has not taken any bold step to counter the threat.
