Dhemaji Needs a Quality Institution
This is with reference to the two write-ups by Dr Uma Kanta Sharma, In Support of Quality Higher Education in Northeast (The Sentinel, June 10, 2007) and In Support of an Engineering College at Dhemaji (The Sentinel, June 17, 2007).
It goes without saying the Dhemaji and North Lakhimpur are among the most backward regions of Assam. Thanks to the annual natural devastation called flood, especially after the 1950 earthquake, Dhemaji particularly has been almost turned into a wasteland, with the State Government hardly doing anything over the years. As the first write-up points out, once the Bogibeel Bridge is completed, at least Dhemajis problems of communication would get resolved to a great extent.
In fact, the bridge could be utilized as a tool to develop Dhemaji in the real sense. And it would be quite appropriate if an institute for higher learning in a technical subject is set up in the area, so that the talented ones among the younger generation can have easier access to higher education near their homes. The whole area, incidentally, does not have any such institute of higher learning. Whether that institute is an engineering college, as being demanded by a lot of people, or one that focuses on vocations that are in demand these days, such as the IT industry or travel and tourism industry, is a matter that should be decided through wide discourse within the civil society. But it goes without saying that Dhemaji needs one such institution.

New Delhi.
