It seems Harvard Graduate School of Education might finally get African or Indian prof. It is perhaps the only school at Harvard which does not have one. It shows that Indians are not interested in education but only in other (money earning fields), is that right?

Subject: [ierc-list] Meeting to inform faculty recruitment at HGSE
Hi all --
Could you use the link below to indicate availability, and we'll set a time that
works for most? Also, could you forward this to others who may be interested in
keeping international ed on the faculty recruitment agenda, as hgse plans its faculty
recruitment vision for the next 10-15 years?
http://www.doodle.ch/dpsepRTMF4yE
As most of you know, we just received the Dean's e-mail about student in-put into
faculty recruitment (see below). We are having this meeting to discuss how
international ed-related students can inform this process, so that international ed
receives the priority that it deserves? E.g. having at least 2 students on the
student comimttee with international ed interests, making sure at least 1-2 of us are
present at the forum, and at least one of us submitting a statement about why it is
imp to recruit more internationally oriented faculty, etc etc.
Thanks.
Bilal

Subject: [Students] Faculty planning and recruitment
Dear Students,
I write to invite your participation in three important activities related to faculty
planning and recruitment.
1. Open Forum for HGSE Students: The Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Faculty,
March 14, 5:00-6:30
There will be a Forum to discuss current and future efforts to recruit and retain
faculty of color and faculty who focus on social and racial justice issues with the
HGSE Dean and the Faculty Appointments Committee
(FAC) on Wednesday, March 14th from 5:00-6:30 in the Gutman Conference Center. This
forum is being jointly planned and convened by the FAC and a group of concerned
doctoral students who submitted a letter to the Dean and Senior Faculty on this
topic. I appreciate very much the cooperative and constructive spirit in which
concerned students have engaged with us to further our mutual understanding and
goals. I also recognize and appreciate the recent letter from 100 master's students
conveying their strong concern about these same and want to assure you that we view
this as an opening for dialogue and communication with all students.
As of Monday, March 5th, a number of background documents will be posted in the
Announcements box on MyGSE that provide information related to faculty demographics
at HGSE and Harvard University; faculty search, hiring, and appointment processes;
current HGSE course offerings relevant to race, equity and social justice issues; and
how students can get involved in faculty searches and recruitment. I hope you will
find these documents useful in understanding some of the context for our discussion.
We would like to make this meeting accessible to all our students. If you need
special accommodations in order to participate, please be in touch with Eileen Berger
in the Office of Student Affairs (eileen_berger at gse.harvard.edu
,
5-5838) in advance of the meeting.
2. Input on the Faculty Recruitment Planning process
This year, the FAC is engaged in a Faculty Recruitment Planning process that is
intended to inform the development of a strategic long-range faculty recruitment plan
for HGSE. Broadly stated, this process seeks to address the question: What should be
the composition of the HGSE faculty of 2010, 2015, and 2020?
As part of this process, in the fall semester the FAC invited the entire core faculty
to submit statements that present an argument for authorizing a search for a new
faculty member in a particular field of study (or for someone with a particular type
of expertise). The FAC then summarized the ideas generated by the faculty and
organized them into 19 premises about the future of education and their implications
for the composition of HGSE's faculty. We have shared this memo with the faculty and
the Senior Faculty is actively discussing the premises. This exercise is intended to
surface ideas and promote discussion. As you might expect, there are widely varying
perspectives on many of the individual premises and ideas. Combined with analysis of
the School's relative strengths and weaknesses, the needs of current and future
programs, projected demand, likely retirements, and other factors, we hope the
conversations about this document will help us set priorities for short- and
long-term recruitment.
The FAC invites interested students to read the document and share their thoughts and
reactions to the premises, suggest their relative priorities (and the rationales for
those priorities), and even suggest entirely new ideas. If you would like to share
your views with the FAC, please send your response to the FAC c/o Shirley Greene in
the Office of Academic Services (greenesh at gse.harvard.edu) by March 23, 2007.
3. Student Advisory Group to the Faculty Appointments Committee
Please nominate yourself or a fellow student to serve on the Student Advisory Group
for the Faculty Appointments Committee. The FAC will select the members of the
Student Advisory Group from among those nominated, seeking balanced representation of
the student body (e.g.
programs/areas of study; master's, beginning doctoral, advanced doctoral level; and
demographic characteristics). The size of the Student Advisory Group will likely be
between 8-12 students.
The Student Advisory Group will serve in the following roles:
1. Meet occasionally with the FAC to discuss issues related to faculty recruitment
and appointments, including plans for new searches, ongoing searches, and strategies
for achieving institutional goals such as increased faculty diversity.
2. Serve as a group that can be called upon to meet with candidates for faculty
positions, and who can also solicit the participation of other students in candidate
visits. Provide detailed feedback to search committees based on interactions with and
observations of candidates.
Represent the School and the student body to candidates.
3. Represent the views of students across the school, and also help to communicate
the activities and perspectives of the FAC to students.
4. Suggest ways in which students can constructively and authentically contribute
ideas related to faculty recruitment and retention.
Please send all nominations and inquiries no later than March 16, 2007 to Carol
Luongo, Office of Academic Services, luongoca at gse.harvard.edu, 5-3957. Nominations
should include: 1) name, phone number, and email address, 2) program and year, 3)
name of advisor or another faculty member who knows you well, and 4) a brief
statement of no more than two paragraphs describing why you wish to be involved in
this group and what you can contribute (or, if you are nominating someone else, why
you think he or she would be a good choice).
Please note that because we are organizing the Student Advisory Group late in this
academic year, the expectation will be that returning students will continue to serve
on the Student Advisory Group next year.
Current master's students are most welcome, with the understanding that if they are
graduating in June, they will be replaced next year by other students.
I hope many of you will find the time to participate in one or more of these
activities. Recruiting the next generation of HGSE faculty is the most important
responsibility I have as Dean. I view increasing the diversity of the faculty as a
critical part of this responsibility, and I welcome the advice and support of
students.
With best regards,
Kathleen McCartney
