The North East Media Forum (NEMF), New Delhi
(in collaboration with the India International Centre, New Delhi)
Invites you to the screening of
TWO films from North-East India
at the IIC Auditorium (IIC, 40, Max Mueller Marg,
New Delhi – 110003, near Lodi Gardens):
1. *JOYMATI (The Saviour)*; Direction: Manju Borah; 2006/Assamese
(with English Sub-titles)/ Colour/ 35mm/ 95 min/ Cinemascope
*Synopsis:* When the political, social and cultural life of a nation is
threatened, a saviour emerges who shoulders the Herculean task of protecting
the nation. During the black period of the Ahom rule (1670-1681) in Assam,
when as many as seven kings had either committed suicide or were poisoned
and common people's suffering were at its worst, Joymati emerged as a
saviour, who is still regarded as a great visionary in the history of Ahom
kingdom.

1. *SONAM - The Fortunate One*; Direction: Ahsan Muzid; 2005/Monpa
(Arunachal Pradesh dialect) with English Sub-titles/Colour/35mm/ 120 mins/
Cinemascope/ Dolby Digital Sound
*Synopsis:* The first film in any language of Arunachal Pradesh, the
easternmost state of India, it deals polyandry in a small society called
Brokpas, a society of 'Yak Shepherds' who live in the mountain slopes of the
Himalayan range. It is a custom in the region where a wife can have more
than one husband. The story, which depicts the firm bond of the natural
pair-bondage that exists between the men and the women, is about Sonam, the
wife of two men slowly and silently suffering due to the body and mind
duality. Being a believer in Buddhism, she indulges herself for a total and
ultimate atonement in death.
