Engineering college a distant dream for Dhemaji
>From our Correspondent
DHAMAJI, March 12: A public meeting with the representatives of all corners of Dhemaji district irrespective of caste, creed and political identities was held at AASU branch office, Dhemaji to gear up for the movement for establishing an engineering college in Dhemaji district of Asom.
The meeting was organized by the AASU Dhemaji district unit and presided over by Dr B Baruah, Principal, Dhemaji College. Dhemaji one of the two hundred identified backward district of India. It is a poor and flood-prone district but it has always been deprived of all basic products, units, industries etc. People have already understood from their past deprivation that Dhemaji is neglected by the State Government in all respects.
The people of Dhemaji have alleged that they have become scapegoats of the shrewd politicians. Politicians, bureaucrats, very often took the advantage of the poor people of this district. It is a zero industry district. There are a few schools and colleges in the name of higher institution. It is alleged that whenever the people of the district demand something for Dhemaji, the demand is outright rejected saying there is no communication, it is a flood-affected district etc etc. But for the last 5 years there is no flood nor any communication problem. BRO has constructed the Bogibeel embankment to solve the flood problem. Remarkably, the NHPC project of 2000 MW is going to be completed soon. Hundreds and thousands of acres of barren lands are lying uselessly, so now there is good infrastructure in the district for establishing any sort of industry or higher technical institutions. The Government of India has instructed the State Government to extend all possible help to the
backward district like Dhemaji in line with other districts of Asom.
Keeping all this in view, AASU Dhemaji district unit organized a public meeting March 11. A strong Demand Committee has been constituted with 10 advisers and adopted some resolutionsdemanding an engineering college, a medical college, university campus of Dhemaji College, conversion of Silapathar Science College to a full-fledged one, speedy completion of the Flood Wall works at Jirdhal river, immediate start of work of Dhemaji district library etc. All Dhemaji district conscious citizens urged the Chief Minister not to play any tricky game with the poor people of this district and sanction the proposed engineering college to be set up at Dhemaji. The people of Dhemaji appeal to the Chief Minister to develop the infrastructure necessary for the establishment of an engineering college, if the expert committee finds some problems in the infrastructure necessary for the same.
