By Sanjay Kumar New Delhi, Mar.19 (ANI): Prominent Assamese musician Zubeen
Garg has said that his state has suffered from a lack of growth for the past
fifteen years. Touted as the modern day Bhupen Hazarika, Garg told ANI that
it was time for Assam to showcase its latent talents after years of neglect,
but cautioned that this could only be possible if peace prevailed across
north east India. A singer from Assam's Jorhat District, Garg possesses the
same passion and protective instinct for Assam as Hazarika. "We have lost
fifteen years of growth. Now we will have to fulfil it again that is our
responsibility," Garg said. Underlining the need for changing Assam's image,
he said: "People from the other parts of India have a very wrong impression
about Assam and the North East. They think only terrorism is there. It's
like that. It is very peaceful. Sometimes, something happens.Everywhere this
happens," felt Garg. Fellow singer Babita Sarma also agrees with Garg. "We
have tolerated enough. Many works have got halted.Outsiders think Assam to
be a jungle because of violence. But it is not a jungle. We don't stay in
jungle. There are so many talents hidden in Assam," said Sarma. Garg and
Sarma, besides other Assamese artists were in New Delhi yesterday to perform
in a culturalrogramme organized by Shrishti,an organization of Assamese
youth. Garg talked at length about his work, his future projects and an
upcoming movie in Hindi. He said his message to the youth of Assam was that,
"They should stick to their culture, to their roots and, they should work
for their state. They should think about peace rather than think about
violence and other things. Everything should be discussed through peace." "I
will tell all the people of Assam that what has happened has happened. We
should leave our past behind. Innocents are also being
killed.Throughviolence, you cannot lead your life. Life would not move
like that. We have
to shed violence to move ahead. This violence is affecting us.. This was the
second year in a row that Shrishti organized a cultural programme for the
Assamese and other North Easterns staying in Delhi. "The idea of organizing
such a cultural show in Delhi is to extend Assam's cultural heritage to
other parts of India. This is our aim. We have a rich culture. And, people
in India should know that.Such cultural shows also help in the national
integration,"said Ratul Sarma, one of the organizers of the show. Some local
singers and musicians also displayed their talents. Dibrugarh MP Sarbananda
Sonowal lit the lamp and congratulated Shrishti for organizing the event. On
the occasion, Shrishti released the first edition of its magazine. (ANI)
