Centre to upgrade airports
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT The Telegraph New Delhi, March 20: The Centre has drawn up a plan to upgrade eight airports in the Northeast most of which are actually greenfield airports.
Agartala, Barapani (Meghalaya), Dibrugarh, Silchar, Guwahati, Itanagar, Pakyong (Sikkim) and Kohima are among the airports the Centre has decided to upgrade.
Pakyong airport is estimated to cost Rs 340 crore out of which Rs 25 crore has been provided during this financial year. However, the funding pattern of the project has not yet been finalised, civil aviation minister Praful Patel told Parliament today.
Arunachal Pradesh will get its first airport. Agartala airport has seen a jump of 35.8 per cent in passenger traffic in 2006-07 while Silchar has seen a rise in passenger traffic by 28 per cent in the same year, according to the civil aviation ministry.
Dibrugarh airport has seen traffic increase by 25.3 per cent while Guwahatis Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport registered passenger traffic increase by a whopping 44.7 per cent in 2006-07. Besides these, Imphal airport has also seen traffic increase by 45.9 percent in the said period.
The state governments have been pressing the Centre to upgrade the existing airports and construct new ones. During the Eleventh Plan, the Centre has prioritised air, rail, land and waterway connectivity for the Northeast and, as sources indicated, funds will not be a constraint.
