[Assam] Citizen’s convention comes up with a united voice on Assam’s Sovereignty. Can India ignore such a democratic demand? Democracies and others of the world need to urge India to let Assam become Sovereign the way America made Britain let India go free.

'Sovereignty should be core issue in ULFA-Centre talks'

GUWAHATI, MAR 23 (PTI)
Toeing the ULFA's line, the People's Committee for Peace Initiatives in
Assam (PCPIA) today said sovereignty should be the core issue in future
talks between the banned group and the government.
In a resolution adopted after a two-day Jatiya Mahasabha or convention, the
PCPIA, an umbrella organisation of 27 bodies sympathetic to the cause of the
ULFA, said the demand for sovereignty should be a "pre-condition" for
discussion with the government.
"Otherwise a plebescite has to be held on the demand for sovereign Assam to
ascertain public opinion," it said.
The peace process has been deadlocked as the ULFA has been insisting on
including the demand for sovereignty in the agenda for talks, while the
Centre has rejected it.
PCPIA claimed the "armed conflict between Assam and India" should be seen as
a "political conflict" and therefore a political solution has to be found.
Moreover, the issue should not be taken as an "insurgency problem" but as a
"political problem", and so there can be no military solution.
Blaming the Centre for the "deadlock in the peace process", another
resolution passed by the meeting urged the government to resume the process.
