Guwahati, March. 30 (PTI): The wives of six ULFA militants who were on a
fast-unto-death to demand information about their "missing" husbands were
arrested and hospitalised here today.

The women, who had been staging the fast at Dighalipukhuri here since March
21, were arrested and admitted to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital for
treatment, Kamrup (metro) Deputy Commissioner Avinash Joshi told PTI.

As the condition of some of the women had deteriorated, police had to take
action and take them to hospital, he said.

The women have claimed their husbands have been "missing" since the Royal
Bhutan Army conducted an operation in late 2003 against ULFA camps in the
kingdom.

Several organisations, including the All-Assam Students Union and prominent
political parties, have urged the government to respond to the demands of
the women. But the government has said there is no information on the
"missing" ULFA cadres with the Centre as Bhutan has not provided any data
about them.

The women told reporters in the hospital that they would continue their fast
till the government came out with the information.
