The Government of northeast Indian State Assam Friday issued a fresh appeal
to the militant group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) to participate
in unconditional talks.

An Assam government official told Xinhua over phone that Assam Chief
Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the government is ready to talk with ULFA
except sovereignty.

"The Government is ready to discuss anything else except sovereignty,
including granting more autonomy or a greater Assam on the lines of the
demand for greater Nagaland made by the National Socialist Council of
Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) during their parleys with the Indian
Government," Gogoi said when addressing the State Assembly.

The ULFA, claiming to fight for an independent Assam, has been blamed for
triggering a series of violence attacks in the state.

The militant group had earlier asked to hold a plebiscite on the issue of
restoration of sovereignty to Assam, which was rejected by the
administration.
