Tight security for Indo-Pak ODI

  GUWAHATI, Nov 2 – Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) Avinash Joshi today revealed that the administration has not received any intelligence inputs regarding any security threat to any of the players of both Team India and Pakistan, who will reach Guwahati on November 4 for the opening One Day International of Indian Oil Cup. However, Joshi while talking to media persons here today, informed that adequate security measures have been taken by the administration to foil any such attempts, with the city being divided into as many as seven security zones.

Elaborating the security plan, Surendra Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (City) said that the seven short-listed security zones have been meant to provide special security cover for important installations like Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, adjoining areas of RG Baruah Sports Complex, Nehru Stadium and security for sensitive routes and for the carcade. 

Besides, Hotel Landmark and Hotel Brahmaputra Ashok where members of both the teams would stray have been selected as the other two sensitive zones. 

Kumar further informed that six battalions of security forces would be deployed in all the identified security zones from today, which will include four Assam Police Battalion and two battalions of CRPF.

“Besides, 190 additional constables, 60 additional sub inspectors and assistant sub inspectors, 20 extra inspector have been roped in to strengthen the security arrangements for the event,” the SSP informed while adding, “ 10 police officials of Deputy Superintendent of Police rank and three officials of Additional Superintendent of Police rank and one official of SP rank have also been entrusted with various responsibilities.”

While divulging about the special security measures that have been planned for areas surrounding the stadium within 1km radius, he reiterated that the official of SP rank would be responsible for the security cover of the Nehru Stadium. The LGBI airport would however be under the jurisdiction of the CISF officials. 

“Special mounted and motorcycle squads will also be stationed for the event,” Kumar pointed out.

The SSP also clarified that no special security cover has been planned for senior Indian players like Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly, saying, “ The security measures, we have planned, will be of top class and it will comprise each and every member of the team and nothing special has been planned for any individual as of now.” 

He went on to say that specific guidelines have been passed to the hotel authorities where team members of both the teams will be putting up.

“We have planned to set up a police control room in the same floor of both the hotels and no other people, barring the team members, would be accommodated in the same floor,” the SSP asserted.

Bursting of firecrackers has also been prohibited by the district administration from November 4 to November 6 within one km radius of the sports complex. Moreover, a host of articles like glass and metal utensils, newspapers, mirror or any kind of reflectors have been prohibited inside the stadium complex.

“ Besides, entry with electronic gadgets and food stuffs would also be barred,” informed the senior police official
