Industrial growth
The foundation of the proposed automobile production unit laid by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on November 2 at the newly set up Chaygaon Industrial Growth Centre is the best thing to happen in the region after a very long time. The Rs 100-crore unit which is the first of its kind in the North East promises to usher in the much-needed and long-awaited industrialisation of the region. The automobile unit which is a part of SAI Motors a Chinese collaboration venture will manufacture tractors, power tillers, two-wheelers including motorcycles. The unit plans to roll out motorcycles brand named Rhino at an affordable price. The unit, apart from initiating the process of industrialisation, will also go a long way in creating employment avenues. About 1,000 youths of the State are likely to be inducted in various capacities in the unit. Apart from the direct employment, the unit will generate opportunities for others. The success of the unit is very important as it will send
right signals to the potential investors. Lack of investment has been the bane of the region which is crying hoarse for development. A host of factors including insurgency, lack of proper infrastructure, communication bottleneck can be attributed for creating hurdles on the road to development. Backwardness, lack of opportunities have weaned away a section of youths into the path of militancy. Realising the gravity of the problems, the Centre and the States of the region have over the years chalked out industrial policies with incentives to prospective investors. But except a few, majority of the investors have shied away. Both the Centre and the States have now given new thrust to develop the regions. The North East holds the key for the success of the ambitious Look East Policy. Now it is the turn of the people of the region to create a congenial atmosphere to attract investments both from the other parts of the country and abroad. Investments will help in
industrialisation of the region. Special Economic Zones should be earmarked to boost industrial growth. Development, in turn, will not only help the region in its forward march but will also go a long way in eradicating a host of problems which are plaguing the region for long.
