>From our Correspondent
JORHAT, Nov 7: Buoyed by the success of the State-level education summit organized here to provide a common platform for academic discussion to the Government, university authorities and job market leaders, Jorhat-based voluntary organization Assam Academic Centre plans to submit the synopsis of the proceedings of the meet to the State Government to facilitate the formulation of an effective education curriculum in future. The meet was held at the auditorium of North East Institute of Science and Technology last week on the sidelines of the ninth edition of Jorhat Book Fair which concluded yesterday. It may be mentioned here that Assam Academic Centre had held the 12-day book carnival at Jorhat District Sports Association ground.
The Chief Minister evinced keen interest in our endeavour and appreciated it in full measure, general secretary of the steering committee of ninth Jorhat Bok Fair Biman Sarmah said. The Education Minister has invited Assam Academic Centre to hold a similar summit in Guwahati, he added.
The education seminar was aimed at preparing a roadmap for building up the skills and qualifications of the students of the State so that they stand greater chances of absorption in industry and other job sectors. Sarmah said that the participants explored the need for effecting necessary changes in various fields of the higher education sector.
Apart from the Chief Minister who inaugurated the summit, the conclave was attended by Education Minister Ripun Bora, vice chancellor of Dibrugarh University Professor Kulendu Pathak, vice chancellor of Assam Agricultural University Dr SS Baghel, NEIST director Dr PG Rao, Professor MP Bezbaruah of Gauhati University and Professor Prabin Bora of IIT, Guwahati.
Other dignitaries in attendance were director of Tea Research Association Dr Mridul Hazarika, registrar of Dibrugarh University Kandarpa Deka and secretary of Higher Education Dr R Zaman.
Sarmah pointed out that the representatives of Wipro, IBM and Infosys, who attended the education summit and gave a profile of their activities in the north-eastern States, had revealed that they had separate criteria of selection for each region of the country divided into zones for reasons of convenience.
On the overwhelming response to the ninth Jorhat Book Fair, the Assam Academic Centre activist said that the publicity blitz in the rural areas increased the footfalls in the book carnival.
On an average, about 60,000 people thronged the fair ground. The 60-odd stalls did business of nearly one crore, Sarmah claimed. Educational institutions from Jorhat, Sivasagar and Golaghat districts went for bulk purchases of books. Childrens books and textbooks were much in demand, he said, adding that the people were also seen lapping up religious books this time around. In comparison, the takers for fictional works were less, he pointed out.
