GUWAHATI, NOV 14 (PTI)
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today offered to release five jailed ULFA
leaders, as demanded by the banned group, if it agrees to sit for peace
talks.
Gogoi told the state Assembly that his government was ready to set free the
five leaders and asked the ULFA leadership to come to the negotiation table.
He said he was hopeful of a positive response to his offer.
Noting the government's priority was to solve the insurgency problem, Gogoi
pointed out his effort would be to bring alround development of the state.
He said the recent unilateral suspension of army operations against the ULFA
as a "good will gesture" was unique.
"The act was unique as it was the first instance in the entire country. This
shows the sincerity of the government to solve the militancy problem," he
said.
On the killing of former FCIs North East head P C Ram, the chief minister
said that the government was ready to handover the case to the CBI.
Reacting to the allegation made by the Opposition leader Chandra Mohan
Patowary that wrong identification of Ram's body was a failure of the
government, Gogoi said nothing could have been done after his own son had
confirmed the identity.
Prior to Ram's killing in the crossfire, one body was found which his son
had wrongly identified to be that of his father.
The chief minister admitted that insurgency despite the best efforts of the
government had impeded growth of the state.
Gogoi declared that the government would lay the report of both the J N
Sarma commission and the K N Saikia commission on "secret killing" on the
floor of the house tomorrow.
The reports will reveal the then Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) government's
failure, he said.
The police force will be strengthened by modernisation and more recruitments
and increase in the number of police outposts in the state.
