[Assam] Culture of Power: NEPIF: TCS Results: Review

To oversome 'shyness' Assamese grads have to learn the "culture of power" of how to work and survive in Indian and global corporate circles - that needs communication skills and basic knowledge about leadership and office politics. I just made friends with a new Harvard College student - straight from High School in Delhi Public School, Ram Krishna Puram , Delhi - many of his school mates are in MIT, Stanford etc too -- is that part of /result of - a culture of power now in place among elites of India - which should be emulated/looked into .

****they are doing good but they are a bit shy".............perhaps we should look at it constructively...what does that mean?......a bit shy is an "euphemism" for perhaps our students dont mix up with local resources. What do you think?

    As part of our continuous efforts, TCS came and went beyond Engg/MCA students and picked up 34 BSc/BCA in Aug - that is a start. Need to take steps to push it upwards. We are examining several steps.

  It is also interesting to see TCS looking at 100 acre site near IITG/140 acre near airport....... In 1997, there were serious talks about TCS opening offices in Guwahati and Jamshedpur. Then Assam Govt got into a tiff with Ratan Tata and Tata Tea and the rest is all history :-(  - so I do sincerely hope this time it happens.

  TCS is now at 80,000 employees. With "Cost of doing business per employee" shooting up in the metro cities, it is only logical to look at 2nd tier cities(where India's real growth is) for operations and recruitment - such as Guwahati and Shillong in our region.

  The other comment that Jairam Ramesh made about the TCS hires from the region past few years - "they are doing good but they are a bit shy".............perhaps we should look at it constructively...what does that mean?......a bit shy is an "euphemism" for perhaps our students dont mix up with local resources.   We express our sincere gratitude to you for your kind cooperation & support in organizing the placement event for TCS on 3rd and 4th August at Gauhati University. We would like to thank Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury, VC, Gauhati University for providing us the venue and helping us to meet the crisis during interview through his prompt and dynamic actions. We would also like to thank Shri Shantikam Hazarika, Director, Assam Institute of Management, for his guidance and constant encouragement to the mission NEPIF. Prof. Arachana Sharma, TPO of Cotton College visited the venue along with her faculty colleague Prof. Ruma Talukdar. We are thankful to them for encouraging us. Shri Kandarpa Sharma, placement in-charge of Gauhati University, and Ms. Babita Saharia, TPO of NERIM deserve special thanks from NEPIF for their painstaking service during the event. We thank all the members of NEPIF. 

  Some Observations:  

  Altogether 220 students reported the venue, out of which only 101 was fulfilling the eligibility criteria. As the news about the event came in news papers viz. The Telegraph, Amar Asom, Pratidin, Agradoot etc. we could get students from almost all the parts of Assam. We had contacted all the universities of NE region, but unfortunately we could not receive response from the other states of the region. However almost all the major colleges of Assam participated in the event. To name a few are Cotton College, B. Borroah College, Arya Vidyapeeth College, Handique College, Lalit Chandra Bharali College, Bajali College, Guru Charan College, Nalbari College,JB College, Dibrugarh University, NERIM etc. 

  TCS’s feedback: 

  The 11 member team from TCS has given the following feedback: 

  Students are good in terms of their subject knowledge and they are honest.
  They need to improve their communication skill ( GD/ Interview) and General Knowledge. They also need to take interest in short term computer courses offered my various institutions. 

  Please find the list of selected candidates in the attachment.

  We will send the Expenditure Statement of the event at the earliest.
