‘Gasifiers can generate power using bamboo’

 NEW DELHI, Sept 1 – The Centre said that all the States including the North East where bamboo is available in plenty could use gasifiers for generation of electricity.

Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Kapil Sibal, said in the Lok Sabha that the Department of Science and Technology is implementing the National Mission on Bamboo Applications (NMBA) to develop, validate and demonstrate technologies for value-added products using bamboo as s raw material.

As part of this mission, gasifiers using bamboo as raw material have been developed for generation of electricity. These gasifiers can use bamboo waste and other biomass, he said. 

However, he added that the Centre has no plans to set up power generation units in the States. However, the States, if interested, could use the technology.
