Of IAS and the Asomiyas
By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Sept 3: Of the 162 IAS officers in Asom, only 30 are Asomiya IAS officers. Out of these, majority are ACS officers nominated to the IAS cadre and some are IAS who have got it under the scheduled caste quota. During the last one decade, only a few Asomiya youths could find a berth in the much-coveted IAS. And of these, interestingly, none has opted for the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. In Assam-Meghalaya cadre of the IAS, there are 216 posts of which 162 are in Asom. But the present trend shows that no Asomiya youth is interested in the Assam-Meghalaya cadre of the IAS. At present, only 30 Asomiya IAS officers are serving in Asom and 21 of them will retire in the next five years.
Mrinal Kumar Baruah will reach superannuation on November 30 while Sunada Sengupta will retire on December 31 this year. In 2008, Pradip Hazarika will retire on January 31, Sasadhar Nath will retire on April 30, Balendra Basumatary will retire on July 31, and Kamal Krishna Hazarika will retire on December 31. In 2009, Biren Dutta will reach superannuation on March 31. From 2010 to 2012, officers like Bhudeb Basumatary, Parul Devi Das, Lakhminath Tamuly, Harish Sonowal, Md Allauddin, Birbhadra Hagjer, John Engti Kathar, Gayatri Baruah, Bhaba Gogoi, Ritendra Nath Sarma and Utpalnanda Sarma will reach superannuation. Chief Secretary PC Sarma will retire on March 31, 2010.
On the other hand, Additional Chief Secretary CK Das will retire on December 31, 2008. Naba Kumar Das will reach superannuation on December 31, 2012. All this means that five years down the line, Asom will be left with only nine Asomiya IAS officers of the present lot and handful of ACS officers who would be nominated to the IAS cadre.
On the other hand, the State Government seems to have done nothing to ensure that Asomiyas should get into the various competitive services like the IAS, IPS etc. Will the head of the State be good enough to tell the people of Asom what he plans to do, so that our boys would find the way to achieve this end.
