WHY DON'T YOU recount your personal observation? We will all learn.
Where does the middleman chain vanish to?
Case in point--Assam Tea-leaves garden 40/- at Kilo-and YOU pay400/- at Kilo! in Ambani Packets.

I agree with what Rina says. I have personally seen the difference that eliminating middlemen can make to the farmers.

Mukesh Ambani talks of hybrid crops and interlinking of rivers, both of which are environmentally and ecologically wrong. Yet, few dare question him at public fora. The problem is, he commands so much of wealth at his disposal that everyone is in awe of him. Where making undue claims about his degree is concerned, he does so since he can get away with it. Besides, it gives him credibility among our English-educated upper classes who cannot accept home-grown intellectuals.

But it is important to never lose sight of certain advantages the retail revolution can have. We need to cut out middlemen, and that is where sourcing directly from farmers can help rural India. I have been reporting from the interiors, and I know, it is the lack of marketing facilities that hamstrings the best producers of foodgrains and vegetables. Middlemen hold everyone to ransom. The recent protests by farmers in Bengal (in favour of Reliance Fresh)prove it. Often, protests gainst industrial groups are spearheaded by middlemen and politicians to protect their own vested interests. The collapse of the co-operative movement and the removal of subsidies for weavers has, I have found, benefited middlemen alone. Activists must take this into account too.
