Hi,
A few of my students and a sister are in medical colleges and had shown interest in becoming doctors in US etc. esp after hearing that an Indian medical doctor now in US had sponsored my Harvard education. He had even guided students of Jaipur School at Jaipur when I had requested him to be present at the morning assemebly and we had a similar Q& A session -he was a fellowship student then at Univ of Hawaii - now asst program director for Geriatrics fellowship at his hospital - directing fellowship students.
Yesterday I asked him about the procedure. His college mate from Indian medical college had also tried but did not make it so my detailed info gathering.
US: There are some of my students and friends in India who would like to come to US to practice doctoring(medicine). Last time you had mentioned that anyone with foreign medical degree needs to do residencey in US after having good scores in 3 stages of USMLE. Wasn't there a quota for international graduates?
KK: Yes there is a well defined process for foreign grads. They have to apply to each medical college (I'm not sure I got it right) or hospital for residencey and based on the USMLE score etc and then the shortlisted candidates would be asked to come to US for interview and a merit list of all interviewd candidates would be made by the univ/hospital. and sent to a central body. Some eople would like to go to top colleges like Harvard, Columbia UCLA etc so those ositions wouldget filled up first - preference given to US citizens/grads - those where not many apply will be filled up last.
US: Do any ofthe candidates have to go back with an intenship slt after having spent so much money in coming here for the interviews ?
KK: It happens off and on.
US: How much USMLE is good enough?
KK: Atleast 80 percentile
US: Your firend Manish had wanted to come to US for internship - what happened to his case?
KK: He didn't the visa to come here for the interview
US: You mean he didn't even get the visitor visa to come for the interviews.
KK: Yes. Now he is trying to help other students get internship thru RANA - Rajasthan Association of North America.
