Role of IT in commerce education stressed

Dibrugarh, Sept 6: The two-day UGC sponsored national seminar on Role of Information Technology in Commerce Education, organized at Sibsagar Commerce College concluded on September 4 . The Seminar was attended by dignitaries and resource persons from Dibrugarh and Gauhati University. The participants from different colleges and universities of the North-east presented all the papers. It was resolved at the seminar that a proposal should be submitted to the UGC and other concerned authorities for setting up an Institute of the IIT and IIM level in upper Asom, more particularly in Sivasagar, for providing modern education. The Director of IIT Guwahati has consented to provide a helping hand to prepare a project in this regard. In his inaugural address, the Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr Kulendu Pathak stressed the need of developing communicative skills of the students and a good business sense. Dr Gautam Barua, Director IIT Guwahati, in his keynote address
asserted that the teachers should be first made aware and trained about information technology to teach the students and therefore the resource persons from the industries should be invited to train the teachers. Computers should be used for teaching the advance concepts to students and as a useful tool, Dr Baruah added. Dr Sunil Saikia, Head CEDM, IIE spoke about the various aspects of the tourism sector, which is about to emerge as the biggest industry in the world. The Deputy commissioner of Sibsagar, NM Hussain during his brief speech spoke about information technology and how it has changed the face of commerce education. Earlier, in his welcome address, Kartick Chandra Dutta, principal, Sibsagar Commerce College, informed the gathering about the new courses that the college has introduced He also disclosed that B.Sc.I.T course would be introduced in the college soon.
