Speech by KIRAN BEDI :
Beginning with an intriguing question as to why people compromising with their conscience are successful..? or why dishonesty has reaped benefits for those who adopted it and left the others battling it out for sustenance? Dr.Kiran Bedi baffled the audience at IIT-Guwahati which expected her to speak out on cyber crimes.
However, she felt glad visiting the part of the country which is visited not by choice but generally on basis of compulsion. Dr.Bedi reflected on the beauty that exists in the untouched natural environment of the north east to the beauty that exists inside its inhabitants, everything that starts from simplicity and politeness but finds a dead end with an honesty labelled with a question mark.
Making reference to the students of IIT G Dr.Bedi pointed out the general trend among the youth of India and not just IIT, i.e. the pursuit of individual gains rather than the collective gains. She pointed out the flaws in our education system which makes India still deficient in its human resource despite possessing bright and fertile brain power of the youth. The demands of Indian intellectuals be it doctors or engineers is not only in research and industry but the society as a whole depends on them. The dreams of making India a superpower by 2020 will still sound a distant dream until our youth was imparted education to educate others, empowered those who have been impoverished and reach out to those millions of under privileged Indians who have never reaped the fruits of our recent earned freedom.
Dr. Bedi stressed on the fact that the youth of India should live for the greater good of their country. The premier institutes of education that the govt. has provided will not solve their purpose until they yield youth full of energy to change things for the better and having the attitude, perseverance and most importantly courage to do what is right and question what is wrong. It is very easy to lead a normal life in which nothing changes. For eg the ethics being questioned and no. of divorces on the rise.
The issue of the students community in India losing out on their patriotic quotient makes it all the more worthwhile to ponder over the system of education were having right now. She urged the director and the faculty of the institute to imbibe more of a social perspective as a part of the curriculum and add a personal reading hour to make them read about great people.
Reforming education is the key to reforms. She urged the young population to act like entrepreneurs and explore their avenues and have that urge to perform against all odds. She also asked them to develop an attitude of asking themselves to give something back to those whom they look up with great expectation. She also reminded us of our sense of duty to our country and of the wider human society as a whole. She also said about people who balanced it- success and a spirit of volunteerism; she also cited its the habits u make that make you
In a fit of motivational fervour she implored the students to change the people who faltered ..to give them perspective, to interact with terrorists, win them over, to donate books pens and impart knowledge to collectively work and help everyone and learn team-working coordination and leadership. Her final message: Grow up to empower your county.
