Expert team visits NHPC site

 DHEMAJI, Sept 12 – An expert committee visited the 2000 MW lower Subansiri Hydel Power Project on September 8 last and participated in an exchange of opinions programme held at Gogamukh Nagar High School in the afternoon organised under the auspices of Dhemaji District Students’ Union. The subject of the opinion programme was the security of the people of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Majuli.

The members of the committee led by Dr Jatin Kalita of Gauhati University assured the people present including nearly 21 organisations and conscious people of Gogamukh area that the committee will work and suggest measures for proper security of the people living below the 116-metre high dam.

Dr Abani Kr Bhagawati, Department of Geography, GU, said that the committee will study the various aspects of the dam with cooperation of people. Dr Bhagwat Pran Duwara of Geology Department of Gauhati University said that the committee will prepare report on the basis of its inspection of the dam site and remote sensing system. Proper data from local people will help the committee. As the construction work of the site has progressed by more than 50 per cent, it is too late now to oppose the project. Now we should try to accept the positive aspects of the project and try to be secured from the negative aspects of the project.

The members of the expert committee include Dr Jatin Kalita, GU, Coordinator, Dr Abani Bhagawati, GU, Dr SK Kalita, GU, Dr BP Duwara, GU, Dr Arup Sarma, IIT, Guwahati, Dr Chandan Mahanta, IIT, Guwahati and Dr Biswash, DU.

The exchange of opinions was conducted by Tolaram Gogoi, finance secretary, AASU. Jitu Bora, president Dhemaji District Students’ Union delivered the welcome speech.

>From among the people present in the programme, Debeswar Pegu, retired principal, North Bank College, MN Patir, retired principal, Gogamukh HS School, Mohan Doley, Diganta Kakati, Ram Doley, Smti Chenimai Doley and Johan Doley, secretary, TMPK, Dhemaji district spoke about the dangers of the project and fears of the people. They also described the various social and economic aspects with the history of the area. Tolaram Gogoi, said that with the coming of the expert team the responsibility of the people of the area has inreased and they must render their duties for the sake of the area.
