A developing work culture marked 2004By A Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, Dec 31 – What have been the positive developments taking place in the State during 2004? To elaborate on the events having an impact for the good in the society, the All Guwahati Students’ Union (AGSU) and the Asom Unnanti Sabha (AUS) organised a programme, ‘Ashar Asom’, at the Guwahati Planetarium where experts from different fields spoke on education and science, economics, politics, literature, culture and sports. A gradual political awakening, a developing work culture, rapid strides made by Assamese poetry, preparation of an all-comprehensive academic calendar, among others, were highlighted as some of the things that held hope for the future.Initiating the discussion, educationist Basanta Deka said that the coming together of all teachers – from primary level to university level – under one platform for addressing the ills plaguing the education sector was the major positive development for education, which was not exactly passing through the best of times. Then putting in place the first-ever comprehensive academic calendar, assessment of the State’s colleges by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), completion of 50 years by a number of educational institutions, several persons getting the National Innovation Foundation awards, success by several students in the IAS examination, etc., were the other notable things.Terming the changing mindset of the Assamese youth who are increasingly opting for income-generating avenues other than government jobs as a significant happening, Dr Soundarya Borbora of IIT Guwahati said that finally agriculture was getting more attention from the authorities, and more and more farmers were resorting to the use of technology for enhanced productivity. “The possibilities of entrepreneurship as an income-generating avenue was being increasingly explored,” he added. Then the immense scope offered by the North-East’s proximity to the neighbouring South Asian countries was also being looked into, as reflected in the Centre’s ‘Look East’ policy.Journalist Samudragupta Kashyap who dwelt on the political scenario, said that assuming of power by the former BLT militants after the agreement on the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD) was among the most significant developments. Peace overtures made by the two major militant outfits, the ULFA and the NDFB, the gradual political awakening of the masses, the countrywide debate on the contentious IM(DT) Act and the growing concern about the grave threat posed by infiltration from Bangladesh, the elevation of an MP from Assam (Dr Manmohan Singh) to the country’s most important post, etc., were cited by him as the other notable happenings. Dr Bhaskar Jyoti Bora, Lakshmi Hazarika and Premadhar Sharma spoke on culture, literature and sports respectively. The encouraging theatre movement, strides made by Assamese poetry and the publication of a number of outstanding novels such as Boragi Nadir Ghat by Anuradha Sharma Pujari, Felani by Arupa Patangiya Kalita, and Shrestha Abhinetri by Abhijit Sharma Baruah, and Rajyabardhan Singh Rathore’s silver medal at the Olympics and Team India’s taming of Pakistan at its own den were some of the major happenings in these fields, they observed.Umesh SharmaWashington D.C. 1-202-215-4328 [Cell]Ed.M. - International Education PolicyHarvard Graduate School of Education,Harvard University,Class of 2005http://www.uknow.gse.harvard.edu/index.html (Edu info)http://hbswk.hbs.edu/ (Management Info)www.gse.harvard.edu/iep (where the above 2 are used )http://jaipurschool.bihu.in/
