[Assam] A touch of history

I happened to stumble into this interesting piece from the New York Times
(in pdf).
It is about a Capt. Maxwell, whose troops sustained serious losses in Assam
in 1894 (probably March).
30 men and 4 officers were presumably massacred.
The article also mentions "the Abors", the tribesmen who defeated the
British columns. Looked that up a bit, and find out that the Abors are
Indo-Tibetan.
The article then mentions Sadiya and "Gowhatty". Interesting, it changed
from that to Gauhati, and then morphed into "Guwahati".
And it was still "Assam" in 1894.
The style and language (English) was also so different.
