Admission in engineering colleges
SIR, – In view of the Central Government’s decision on admission policy to National Institute of Technology and to overcome the loss of seats in Engineering Colleges outside the State, the Chief Minister announced that the number of seats in the Assam Engineering College and Jorhat Engineering College would be increased by another 300 from this year to accommodate maximum number of students of the State. This announcement of the Chief Minister himself gave much mental relief to both eligible students and their guardians. But surprisingly, for these extended seats no counselling has been done for which both the students and their guardians became nervous as these students did not make any attempt to get themselves admitted outside the State, relying upon the announcement of the Chief Minister. These students should not lose their valuable year of study for no fault of theirs. The Chief Minister as well as the Minister for Higher Education are
requested to take up the matter with all seriousness for approval of seat enhancement so that these students do not get frustrated. By this time, the authority should announce a date for counselling for the residual 300 seats before August 15 and the government should also remove any deficiency in infrastructure with all earnestness. —Yours etc., DR NC THAKURIA, Lachit Nagar, Guwahati.

Sir, – On June 30 last the Chief Minister held a meeting at his office chamber and directed the concerned officials of Higher Education depart-ment to expedite the process of increasing the number of seats in two Engineering colleges coupled with increase in faculty members so that students who pass Higher Secondary in Science stream in large numbers this year could be accommo-dated to the extent possible.
This decision was taken due to high percentage of pass candidate in Science stream in HS examination. The CM directed the concerned officials of Technical Education to enhance 300 seats more from the current academic session itself and to take immediate necessary steps to get approval from AICTE, Delhi. The Education Minister in charge, Dr Bhumidhar Barman also replied in the State Assembly that necessary funds for infrastructure had already been released but the funny thing is that during councelling of Engineering candidates that started from July 22 last at Chandmari Engineering Institute did not reflect the assurance given by the Chief Minister. The candidates from Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar came directly to the councelling centre in the hope of getting admission in the two engineering colleges of the State but all high hopes and aspiration aroused by the State authority came to nought due to the failure in enhancing the number of seats in the
two colleges. —Yours etc., S DASCHOUDHURY, Guwahati.
