Charity walk today in aid of underprivileged children
By A City Correspondent
GUWAHATI, March 8 - The plight of the underprivileged children in the State has moved a Gandhian residing in faraway Queensland in Australia. To promote the cause of these unfortunate children, Gandhian Garvin Brown who runs an organization called Mahatma Gandhi Awareness in Queensland will lead a charity walk on March 9 in the capital city.

The programme aimed at raising funds for a few schools for the underprivileged is being organized by Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters (FASS), an association formed by the resident and non-resident North East Indians. "The charity walk is a bid to create awareness for promoting education for the underprivileged children of North Eastern India," said the organizers.

The walk will start from Dighalipukhuri and end at Kasturba Gandhi Ashram and it would be followed by a meeting at the hall of Sarania Ashram. Brown will address the meeting.

The beneficiaries of the fund- raising attempt will be Parijat Academy, Prajnalaya, Asha Darshan and Auxilium Umpohliew Jingstad.

Each school has its own history that speaks volumes about the dedication and hard work put to give a new life to the underprivileged children. Parijat Academy, located at Pamohi, a small village lying by the side of Deepar Beel, caters to tribal children whose parents work in the nearby stone quarries. This school was started by a local tribal youth who had dreams of removing the darkness hovering around the area due to poverty and illiteracy.

Prajnalaya, located at Charaipani, Titabor, was established by a former insurgent who had given up arms and had made it his mission to educate the downtrodden children. Apart from looking after children below poverty line, the school also gives shelter to the destitute and the physically challenged children.

Asha Darshan at Baksa district was established to promote education in a poverty-ridden and militant-prone area. The Auxilium Umpohliew Jingstad in Ribhoi district in Meghalaya not only provides education and vocational training to the underprivileged children, but also runs an orphanage.

The FASS has appealed to the citizens to come forward and stand by the underprivileged children.
